Sustainable Housing: Eye-catching and Energy Efficient - Aussie Blog

Sustainable Home

For many Australians, Sustainable House Day would have passed by unnoticed. Yet the day is rapidly gathering momentum as the energy conscious among us look for a way to save money and protect the environment.

Held annually in early September, the day was started as an initiative by The Australian Solar Energy Society in 2001. Stories relating to global warming, climate change and emissions trading have become increasingly prevalent since the turn of the century and in many ways the day was spawned from an increased level of interest in the environment from both media and members of the public.

Sustainable housing is loosely defined as ?homes that are built using sustainable methods, materials, and facilitate green practices, enabling a sustainable lifestyle.?

The Australian Solar Energy Society states its aim as to ?provide an enjoyable, informative day that contributes to local community awareness of sustainable living.? The day is really a series of open homes, allowing visitors to take inspiration for their own homes and learn how easy it is to save money by improving the efficiency of their own homes.

It was an article about a certain corrugated steel house in Ballarat, Victoria that really captured our attention.

Just one of the many houses endeavouring to protect the environment, this fascinating home is the perfect example of energy efficiency using natural sunlight to heat each of its many rooms. The design of the home allows the temperature to remain fairly consistent all year round without the need for heaters or air conditioners ? imagine the savings on your energy bill!

The house also contains ?90,000 litres of rain water storage, hydronic in-slab heating, polished concrete floors and solar panels which generates all of the required energy needs.?

If you attended one of the many homes open for Sustainable House Day this year we?d love you to hear your story.
