This study randomly assigned 438 overweight and sedentary 50 to 75 year old women to one of four groups: exercise only, diet only, diet plus aerobic exercise, or no change. After one year, the women who dieted with and without exercise lost an average of 10 percent of their starting weight. Losing just five percent of body weight through diet and/or exercise lowered the levels of several hormones, compared to the controls.

The largest decrease was found for the biologically active form of estrogen called free estradiol. Estradiol decreased 21 percent among the women who only dieted, and 26 percent among those who dieted and exercised. The greater the weight loss, the lower the levels. Testosterone levels also decreased among the women who dieted with and without exercise.

EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future named Mississippi State University its Year One winner at the EcoCAR 2012 Competition in Los Angeles. The 15 universities competing in EcoCAR 2 gathered for six days of judged competition with $100,000 in prize money up for grabs. EcoCAR 2, a three-year competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), General Motors (GM) and 25 other government and industry leaders, gives students the opportunity to gain eco-friendly automotive engineering experience while striving to improve the energy efficiency of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu.

Year One of the competition series emphasized engineering design though modeling and simulation to select and virtually test their plug-in hybrid electric vehicle architecture. Teams also started developing their hybrid control strategy using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation tools and designing major vehicle subsystems, including hybrid powertrain, energy storage, and high-voltage electrical systems.

Throughout the competition events in Los Angeles, EcoCAR 2 teams put their designs to the test, giving presentations to industry and government professionals based on their mechanical, electrical, control and HIL strategies, project initiation approval, outreach and business plans, and trade show display.

Mississippi State University was named the Year One winner after impressing more than 100 judges representing various EcoCAR 2 sponsors with its series-parallel plug-in hybrid electric vehicle design. The team produced top tier design reports, won Best Facilities Inspection, Best Final Technical Report, Best Project Initiation Approval Presentation, Best Trade Show Evaluation, and Best Controls Presentation categories. While Mississippi State won the top prize, it wasn?t the only winning team at the Year One Finals. In addition, the second place team is The Ohio State and University of Waterloo took third place overall. Now that their vehicle architectures are finalized, the 15 teams also received the keys to the GM-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu they will spend the next two years rebuilding, testing and refining.

Israel rejects appeal to free Fatah MP

NABLUS (Ma'an) -- Israel's high court on Sunday rejected an appeal to end the administrative detention of Palestinian MP Hussam Khader, his lawyer said.

Khader has been detained without charge or trial since June 2011. He was due to be released on June 1 but an Israeli military commander extended his detention by six months.

Jawad Boulos of the Palestinian prisoners society told Ma'an that Israel's high court decided not to overturn the decision to extend the Fatah lawmaker's detention, but said Khader's administrative detention would not be extended any further.

Boulos said Israeli authorities had promised before not to extend Khader's detention.

He added that by refusing to release Khader, Israel was reneging on the deal it struck with prisoners on May 15 to end a mass hunger strike.

Under the deal, Israel committed not to renew the administrative detention of all 322 Palestinians held without charge if there was no new information that required their imprisonment.

Under Israel's administrative detention policy, prisoners can be held without formal charges for renewable periods of six months. Defendants and their lawyers are not given access to the evidence used to imprison them.

Prisoners rights group Addameer said after the hunger strike deal it is "concerned that these provisions of the agreement will not explicitly solve Israel?s lenient and problematic application of administrative detention, which as it stands is in stark violation of international law."

Some 27 Palestinian MPs are held in Israeli jails, including 24 held without charge or trial.

Khader has been arrested repeatedly by Israel, Boulos said. He has been detained by Israeli forces on 26 occasions and spent nine years in Israeli prisons, the lawyer said.

Chairman of the parliamentary committee for the defense of refugees, Khader is a known champion of reconciliation with Hamas.

Double dose of cute: Twins run in the Artworks family

For those of you that don?t know ? our owner, Rebecca Sproles Eubanks, is an identical twin. ?When we found out her twin sister, Beth DeLemos, was pregnant last year there were lots of happy tears shed at the studio and among Rebecca?s family as Beth would be the first Sproles to give a grandchild. A few months later we found out that Beth was expecting twins and the waterworks started up again, excitedly anticipating the arrival of two bundles of joy! When the doctors determined Beth would be having?fraternal?twin girls, you can image the pure shock and joy that Rebecca and her family experienced, knowing that the legacy of twin girls would continue.

In February, Beth came to Tulsa for a baby shower hosted by Rebecca and a few other close family friends, and of course we had to shoot a few prego pictures! A huge thanks goes out to our BFF, Andrea, owner of Andrea Murphy Photography for her help both with the party and in capturing these beautiful images! They couldn?t have done it without her.

In talking with Rebecca recently about the experience of seeing her sister become a mother, she said, ?Beth?s amazing in every way and is already an incredible mother but holy mackerel, what a life change!??Pictured on the right is the woman who started it all- Susan Sproles. On April 8th, 1980, she gave birth to the family?s first set of twins. Born and raised in Georgia, with appropriately Southern names, Rebecca Anne and Mary Elizabeth were delivered to one fabulously classy lady! And please, look at her, she doesn?t even age!?Susan shed the most tears when she learned of Beth?s multiple pregnancy ? we?re still trying to convince ourselves that it was from pure joy and not from the knowledge that twins are a lot of work.

Check out the darling birth announcement for Caroline & Abigail!?Of course, proud Aunt Becky couldn?t resist the chance to photograph her brand new baby nieces when she?drove 12 hours?to meet them for the first time in April. All of these images were captured when the girls were just four days old. Poor Rebecca cried the whole 12 hours back to Tulsa- living half-way across the country from these little cuties is going to be a challenge!

Rebecca gifted the girls with her favorite photograph in a beautiful 40 x 30 inch frame from The Organic Bloom, coordinated to match their nursery in their new home in Georgia.?We will be sure to see more of Caroline and Abigail as we plan on featuring pictures of their nursery on the blog as they get settled in Atlanta.

Rebecca is absolutely in love with these two little cuties, and who could blame her? Beth and?Becky?already have plans to induct Caroline and Abigail into their super special twins club and can only imagine the adventures these girls have ahead of them.

PHOENIX (AP) ? Arizona's secretary of state says Hawaii's verification of President Barack Obama's birth records meets necessary requirements and that the president's name will appear on Arizona's ballot in the fall.

The inquiry gave official weight to a long-simmering political controversy generated by those who say that Obama was not born in the U.S.

The Obama administration attempted to dismiss the conflict a year ago by releasing his long-form birth certificate showing that he was born in Hawaii.

But skeptics maintained their stance and eventually Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett announced he would seek further verification, even saying he was prepared to leave Obama's name off the state's ballot in November.

Bennett said Wednesday that Hawaii has officially confirmed the information on a copy of Obama's birth certificate as accurate.

Last week, noted psychiatrist Dr. Robert Spitzer wrote an apology letter to the LGB community for his efforts to show that ?reparative therapy? (which supposedly makes you straight) could actually work with people who desired to change their sexual orientation. The letter was published in Archives of Sexual Behavior, the same journal in which his original study was published in 2001. The New York Times published an article about Spitzer and his apology last week, highlighting the fact that Spitzer was originally one of the clinicians responsible for de-classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder in the 1970s. Yet with the advent of reparative therapy, Spitzer became curious if it actually worked. With this question in mind, he conducted his now infamous study. Spitzer did cite the caveat that he didn?t ever believe gay and lesbian people should have to change their orientation if they didn?t want to. However, the way this study would be used by homophobic organizations, to prove a point, and the far-reaching social fallout of the study are disturbing, to say the least.

The myths may always be there. And the desire to justify, or to ?figure out,? why some people are gay, lesbian, or bisexual, will likely always fuel some portion of the population?s creative endeavors. I?ve been thinking a lot about some of these myths and ?explanations? lately. They?re funny. Yet I?ve also been thinking about how some of my work as a therapist involves using these explanations to tease apart assumptions and social constructs from reality so that I can help my clients find a sense of normalcy, and perhaps even a sense of empowerment. Some of the studies about gay and lesbian relationships can be helpful for this reason, and also for the very simple act of de-bunking what the majority thinks to be true.

The first study I?ll talk about is one called ?What?s the Confusion About Fusion?? published in the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy in October 2010. The title is clever, and if you?re a lesbian reading this you probably know exactly what they?re talking about. You probably know what they?re talking about even if you?re straight. What these researchers studied was the idea of negative and positive closeness in lesbian relationships, and the contributing factors to these. Negative closeness refers to an invasive form of closeness, whereas positive closeness refers to a healthy level of intimacy. The context of this study is important, because there has been a very provocative myth generated for a long time that lesbian relationships are defined by enmeshment, or a lack of differentiation, which is unhealthy (the not-so-subtle message here is that lesbian relationships are unhealthy). Before you figured out that the Bobbsey Twins were actually a boy and a girl, they were the perfect mascot for this myth. There were some logical explanations for this idea, namely that having to live a life in which a couple?s lifestyle is stigmatized, where there is little social support, and where self-esteem is a problem, a couple seeks safety and support only via the relationship instead of from multiple areas of life, which isolates and fuses the couple. This explanation makes sense, but it?s actually not true. The study showed that the factors that contributed most to healthy and unhealthy relationships were attachment style and out-ness (the degree to which a person was comfortably out in their lives). This means that a couple that experiences a healthy level of closeness in their relationship likely has two people who have a more secure attachment style and who are more comfortable with showing affection with each other. More importantly, they found that there is a relative degree of closeness in these lesbian relationships that is better tolerated than it would be in heterosexual relationships. So, women may value closeness in relationships, and seek it out, more than men do.

The big deal here is a point that I?ve seen be made in my practice with gay, lesbian, and straight couples: it doesn?t matter what your orientation is; you can be in a heterosexual relationship and feel that your partner is relying on you for too much, or you can be in a same-sex relationship and feel that your partner is too distant too much of the time. But in long-term lesbian relationships, there will likely be a higher level of closeness that both women enjoy and value. Although this may not seem like a big deal, the understanding that this is normal and healthy may be important and empowering to lesbian culture.

The Gottman Institute conducted a 12-year study with gay and lesbian couples, and found some interesting distinctions (based mainly on gender differences) between opposite-sex couples and same-sex couples. Some of the important ones are:

• Gay and lesbian couples tend to have lower levels of arousal when arguing, meaning that they don?t react as strongly to each other. This ultimately points to the ability of each person to (consciously or unconsciously) soothe his or her partner in the midst of conflict.
• Lesbians were more emotionally expressive during fights, showing more anger, humor, excitement, and interest than their gay male counterparts did during arguments.
• Gay men have a harder time recovering from negativity during an argument with a partner than lesbians or opposite-sex couples.
• Gay and lesbian couples appear to be more capable of equitable communication when fighting, as evidenced by less hostility, domineering, and fear used between couples in the face of an argument.

So, what does this tell us? For one, gay and lesbian relationships are different than straight relationships in some matters. Gay and lesbian couples also have some innate sources of strength and health that come through during conflicts. Although conflict is uncomfortable no matter whom you are or what kind of relationship you?re in, it can help to know that you may be doing some things ?right? rather than feeling like you?re contributing to the downfall of the relationship. Conflict is inevitable, and what ultimately matters is how you argue with your partner. If you?re willing to listen, even when you feel wronged; if you?re willing to laugh at yourself, even when you feel vulnerable; if you?re willing to show respect for your partner, even when you feel small, you?ll be amazed at what will come out of the conflict. Instead of a battle to the death? or to somebody?s loss, you may find instead that it?s both of you who win.
