Juventus looking to extend unbeaten Serie A season

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:23 a.m. ET Jan. 30, 2012

MILAN (AP) -Serie A leader Juventus will look to extend its unbeaten league run to 21 games this season at Parma on Tuesday and move four points provisionally clear at the top of the standings.

Juventus is the only club still unbeaten in Serie A, with every other team having lost at least three games.

"We're performing beyond the most rose-colored predictions," defender Giorgio Chiellini said. "We were convinced we could have a very good season but we were also coming off the back of two difficult years and in summer, although we didn't start building again from zero, we changed a lot.

"We've been good in immediately finding a balance and a style of play and now we're continuing to grow. It's a process that has not stopped yet and it has to continue if we want to achieve a dream."

Parma is unlikely to pose Juventus much of a challenge, having won just once in its past 10 games.

Juventus gave another solid performance on Saturday by beating third-place Udinese 2-1 to remain a point clear of second-place AC Milan, which faces Lazio on Wednesday in a rematch of last week's Italian Cup clash. Milan won that match 3-1.

Tuesday will also be significant in that the transfer window closes at 7 p.m. local time (1800 GMT) and Juve has not ruled out strengthening its squad still further.

"If tomorrow we sense the possibility of improving the squad, we will do so," general director Giuseppe Marotta said on Sunday. "We shouldn't hide, the numbers are on our side. We're unbeaten and we have to act out the role of protagonists. We will fight until the end so that we can give everyone a glorious finish."

Milan is likely to chase Juventus all the way and the current Serie A champion is still clinging close after a comfortable 3-0 win against Cagliari as the bid for the title swiftly looks like developing into a two-horse race.

"The table's stretched out a bit now," Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "It was important to win to remain in Juventus' wake and to create a gap between third and fourth after the weekend's results."

Allegri is also unconcerned that midfielder Alexander Merkel will be out for at least two months with a knee injury.

"I'm sad to have lost Merkel for two months," he said. "However, it's not a worry for me because Emanuelson played very well. This lad has grown a lot in the last few games, also because he has played in a run of games."

Maxi Lopez could make his debut after the new signing was on the bench for Milan at the weekend.

Lazio will present a tougher challenge than Cagliari. It beat Chievo Verona at the weekend to leapfrog above Inter Milan and into fourth place in the standings. Any slip up from Udinese, which faces rapidly-improving Lecce, could see Lazio move into third in the table.

Inter is a point behind Lazio after a surprise loss to Lecce at the weekend which snapped the Nerazzurri's seven-match winning streak in the league.

Claudio Ranieri's team hosts Palermo, which has picked up just three points on its travels all season.

Elsewhere, it's: Atalanta vs. Genoa; Bologna vs. Fiorentina; Cagliari vs. Roma; Napoli vs. Cesena; and Siena vs. Catania. On Thursday rock-bottom Novara faces Chievo.

Source: Investors face 70 pct loss in Greek deal

(AP) ? Investors participating in a deal to slash Greece's massive debt would face an overall loss on their bond holdings of around 70 percent, a person familiar with the negotiations said Monday.

Athens and representatives of investors holding Greek government bonds over the weekend came close to a final deal designed to make Greece's debt sustainable. The country has to secure an agreement with its creditors to get any further international rescue funds.

If the agreement works as planned, it will help Greece remain solvent and help Europe avoid a blow to its already weak financial system, even though banks and other bond investors will have to accept multibillion-dollar losses.

The person briefed on the talks said Monday that the 70 percent loss was the result of cutting the bonds' face value in half, reducing the average interest rate to between 3.5 per cent and 4 percent and pushing repayment of the bonds decades into the future.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the talks are confidential.

The deal, which aims to reduce the country's debt by about euro100 billion, needs to be finalized quickly. Greece runs the risk of a disorderly default on March 20, when it faces a euro14.5 billion bond repayment it cannot afford without additional help.

Many investors ? banks, insurance companies and hedge funds ? who hold Greek bonds also hold debt from other countries that use the euro, which could lose value if there is a full-fledged Greek default. This is the scenario analysts fear most and why they hope investors will voluntarily accept a partial loss on their Greek bonds.

The agreement taking shape is a key step before Greece can get a second, euro130 billion bailout. The country has been surviving since May 2010 on an initial euro110 billion package of rescue loans from other countries using the euro and the International Monetary Fund.

Besides restructuring its debt with private investors, Greece must also take other steps to secure further aid. It must cut its deficit and boost the competitiveness of its economy through layoffs of public sector workers and the sale of several state companies, among other moves.

Earlier Monday, Greek lenders Eurobank and Alpha Bank said a planned merger to create the country's largest bank by assets could be put on hold because of the negotiations over the bond swap.

The banks said that "an accurate timeline cannot be given" to complete the deal announced last August because of the negotiations.

Greece's finance ministry expressed surprise at the announcement, arguing that the negotiations had produced "nothing new or different" to factors already taken into account by both banks.

Johnson, Williams carry No. 10 Miami women past BC (AP)

BOSTON ? Shenise Johnson scored 16 of her 22 points in the opening half to lead No. 10 Miami to its eighth straight win, an 88-57 rout over Boston College on Sunday.

The Hurricanes (19-3, 8-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) never trailed and pulled to a double digit lead on Riquna Williams' basket in the lane 5:44 into the game. Their advantage never dropped into single digits the rest of the way.

Williams had 15 of her 18 points in the first half while Stefanie Yderstrom added 15 points for Miami, which hasn't lost since dropping its conference opener at North Carolina on Jan. 2.

Tessah Holt paced Boston College (5-16, 0-8) with 12 points. The Eagles have lost eight straight.

Williams, who needs six points to become the program's fifth player to reach 2,000, also grabbed eight rebounds. Johnson became the fourth to reach the 2,000-point mark earlier this season.

Miami missed its first two shots from the floor before its superior tandem of Johnson and Williams combined with its pressure defense to take charge.

Johnson missed the first shot of the game ? a short jumper in the lane ? but hit six of her next eight during the first half. She scored eight of her team's initial 16 points as the Hurricanes pulled to a 13-point lead on her 3-pointer.

After Johnson's offensive surge, Williams dominated, scoring 11 straight Miami points and 13 of 16 as the Hurricanes pushed their lead to 27-11 midway into the half.

Johnson's two free throws gave the Hurricanes a 41-16 edge, their largest lead in the opening half.

Miami, which forced 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes, led 48-27 at intermission.

The Hurricanes pushed their lead over 30 points (61-29) on Williams' basket early into the second half. They came out after intermission and scored 13 of the initial 15 points, making sure the Eagles wouldn't give them any threat.

Williams came down awkwardly after a basket late in the first half and walked to the bench gingerly, but she started the second half.

The Hurricanes entered the game leading the conference averaging 14.3 steals per game.

(AP) ? The Arab League halted its observer mission in Syria on Saturday because of escalating violence that killed nearly 100 people the past three days, as pro-Assad forces battled dissident soldiers in a belt of suburbs on the eastern edge of Damascus in the most intense fighting yet so close to the capital.

The rising bloodshed has added urgency to new attempts by Arab and Western countries to find a resolution to the 10 months of violence that according to the United Nations has killed at least 5,400 people as Assad seeks to crush persistent protests demanding an end to his rule.

The United Nations is holding talks on a new resolution on Syria and next week will discuss an Arab peace plan aimed at ending the crisis. But the initiatives face two major obstacles: Damascus' rejection of an Arab peace plan which it says impinges on its sovereignty, and Russia's willingness to use its U.N. Security Council veto to protect Syria from sanctions.

Syria's Interior Minister Mohammed Shaar vowed the crackdown would go on, telling families of security members killed in the past months that security forces "will continue their struggle to clean Syria's soil of the outlaws."

Government forces launched a heavy assault on a string of suburbs and villages on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, aiming to uproot protesters and dissident soldiers who have joined the opposition, activists said.

Troops in tanks and armored personnel carriers attacked the suburbs of Kfar Batna, Saqba, Jisreen and Arbeen, the closest of which lie only a few miles from downtown Damascus, said the Local Coordination Committees activist network and the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Dissident troops were fighting back against the attackers, they said.

In a nearby suburb, Douma, gunmen ambushed a bus carrying army officers, the state-run news agency SANA, calling the attackers "terrorists." It said seven officers were killed.

The assault in the suburbs seemed to be a sign of the growing presence of dissident soldiers closer to the capital. Although the tightly controlled Damascus has been relatively quiet since the uprising began, its outskirts have witnessed intense anti-regime protests and army defectors have become more visible and active in the past few months.

"The fighting today is the most intense near the capital since the uprising began," said Rami Abdul-Rahman who heads the Observatory for Human Rights. "The Syrian regime is trying to finish the uprising militarily now that the case is being taken to the United Nations."

In Saqba, electricity and phone lines were cut off and mosque loudspeakers told residents to say in lower floors for fear high buildings might get hit in the fighting, said Omar Hamza, an activist in the district. "Random shelling and sound of explosions terrified the people," he told The Associated Press.

He said army defectors had managed to stop the advancing troops. The regime forces are putting all their force to finish the Free Syrian Army and protesters in the Damascus suburbs," Hamza said.

The Free Syrian Army force of anti-regime military defectors is based in Turkey, and its fighters frequently try to cross into Syria through the mountainous border area in the northwest. SANA reported that Syrian troops prevented gunmen from crossing in from Turkey on Saturday in fighting that it said left many of the infiltrators killed or wounded.

The LCC and the Observatory also reported intense fighting between troops and defectors in the town of Rastan near the restive central city of Homs.

The Observatory said at least 36 people, were killed across the country Saturday, including 17 civilians, three defectors and 16 troops, while the LCC said 20 died, half of them in Homs province, which has been one of the areas hardest hit by government crackdowns. The new deaths come after two days of bloody turmoil killed at least 74 people, including small children.

In the eastern oil-rich province of Deir el-Zour, an oil pipeline took a direct hit and caught fire as government troops shelled a nearby town, the two groups also said, reporting at least one person dead. State media blamed "terrorists" in the attack.

The month-old Arab League observer mission in Syria had come under widespread criticism for failing to bring a halt to the regime's crackdown. Gulf states led by Saudi Arabia pulled out of the mission Tuesday, asking the U.N. Security Council to intervene.

Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby said in a statement that the organization decided to halt the observers' work immediately because of the increasing violence, until the League's council can meet to decide the mission's fate.

He sharply criticized Damascus for the spike in bloodshed, saying the regime has "resorted to escalating the military option in complete violation of (its) commitments" to end the crackdown, Elaraby said. He said the victims of the violence have been "innocent citizens," in an implicit rejection of Syria's claims that it is fighting "terrorists."

Syria's state-run news agency quoted an unnamed official saying Damascus "regrets and is surprised" by the Arab League decision after Syria agreed to extend the observer's mission for another month. The official said the halt aims "to pressure the talks in order to call for external intervention in Syria's internal affairs," referring to the U.N. talks.

Elaraby's deputy, Ahmed Ben Heli, told reporters that the around 100 observers will remain in Damascus while their mission is "reevaluated." He suggested the observers could resume their work in the future...

Elaraby and the prime minister of Qatar were set to leave for New York on Sunday to seek U.N. support for the latest Arab plan to end Syria's crisis. The plans calls for a two-month transition to a unity government, with Assad giving his vice president full powers to work with the proposed government.

Syria has rejected the proposal, saying it violates its sovereignty. Elaraby had previously been due to travel Saturday, but his trip was pushed back to Sunday with no explanation.

The U.N. Security Council began closed-door negotiations Friday on a new Arab-European draft resolution aimed at resolving the crisis, but Russia's envoy said he could not back the current language as it stands.

Any resolution faces strong opposition from China and Russia, and both nations have veto power. Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters that the text introduced by new Arab Security Council member Morocco has "red lines" for Moscow, but he's willing to "engage" with the resolution's sponsors.

Churkin said those lines include any indication of sanctions, including an arms embargo. "We need to concentrate on establishing political dialogue," he said.

80 percent of 'irreplaceable' habitats in Andes unprotected

Saturday, January 28, 2012

Hundreds of rare, endemic species in the Central Andes remain unprotected and are increasingly under threat from development and climate change, according to a Duke University-led international study.

"These species require unique ecological conditions and are particularly vulnerable to changes in the environment or climate. Yet our analysis shows that region-wide, about 80 percent of the areas with high numbers of these species lack any protection," said Jennifer Swenson, assistant professor of the practice of geospatial analysis at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.

The study, published today in the peer-reviewed, open-access journal BMC Ecology, identifies and maps the geographic ranges of hundreds of species of plants and animals ? including mammals, birds and amphibians ? that are found nowhere in the world outside the Andes-Amazon basin in Peru and Bolivia.

The threat to these species has become especially severe in recent years, Swenson said, as oil and gold mining, infrastructure projects, agriculture and other human activities encroach farther into the region's biologically rich landscapes.

"This is one of Earth's most rapidly changing areas," she said.

To conduct their study, Swenson and her colleagues collected more than 7,000 individual records of endemic species locations for 115 species of birds, 55 mammals, 177 amphibians and 435 plants. They combined these with satellite images and climate, topography and vegetation data to create models, detailed to one kilometer, that mapped endemic species distributions across the entire basin ? from the forested slopes and dry inter-mountain valleys of the Andes all the way to the low-lying Amazonian wetlands and savannas.

By overlaying this data with maps showing modern political boundaries in the Andes-Amazon basin, the researchers found that only about 20 percent of the areas with high numbers of endemic species or high levels of irreplaceability fell within national parks or protected areas, and that 226 rare endemic species lacked any national-level protection at all. Irreplaceability is a term used by conservationists to denote biodiversity hotspots where high numbers of endemic species with very small ranges live. These are often among the most vital ? and vulnerable ? habitats in a region.

"Interestingly, one of the areas we identified with the highest number of bird and mammal species and one of the highest levels of irreplaceability was an unprotected region surrounding the World Heritage Site of Machu Picchu, one of the most heavily visited tourist destinations in the region," Swenson noted.

As the effects of development and climate change continue to shrink or shift geographic ranges in coming decades, some species may literally be running out of ground, she said.

"Conservation strategies across the Andes urgently need revising," she said. "There is already evidence of species migrating upslope to keep up with climate change. We hope our data will help protect this incredibly unique region."

Bruce E. Young, director of species science at the nonprofit conservation organization NatureServe, was principal co-author of the study. Twenty additional collaborators from conservation agencies and organizations in Peru and Bolivia helped gather data.

WikiLeaks founder to host Kremlin-funded TV show (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Kremlin-funded English language channel Russia Today has given WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange his own TV talk show, the station said this week.

Filming for Assange's television debut is already underway from Britain, where he remains under house arrest outside London while appealing an extradition order to Sweden, it said.

Russia Today - considered a Kremlin exercise in image enhancement by critics - said Assange will invite 10 "key political players, thinkers and revolutionaries" for interviews on a show dubbed "The World Tomorrow," due to air in mid-March.

"Everything we do on the air is different from the English-language mainstream, that is something we have in common with Assange," RT's editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan told Reuters.

"The show is a perfect fit for RT's motto: 'Question more'," she said. "We are counting on it attracting the interest of a wide audience."

Simonyan refused to say how much Assange will be paid for the chat show.

Beamed to 430 million cable subscribers worldwide, the Kremlin channel offers a rare public platform for a man whose WikiLeaks website has come under intense pressure after publishing a raft of secret U.S. diplomatic cables and seen its ability to fund itself crippled.

Assange, a 40-year-old Australian, has said the refusal of many financial transactions firms - including Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and Western Union - to work with WikiLeaks have damaged the website's ability to continue its work.

Assange is expected to appear before Britain's Supreme Court on February 1 to appeal an extradition order to Sweden, where he has been accused of sexual misconduct by two female Swedish WikiLeaks volunteers.

Vladimir Putin, who has ruled Russia since 2000 as president and prime minister, has blasted Assange's 2010 arrest as "hypocritical."

Russia Today kept secret about the names of potential guests, saying only Russian opposition figures may be among them, but speculation was rife on social media websites about who could be invited onto the show.

Media analyst Konstantin von Eggert said he expected to see Assange interview Russian allies and anti-establishment guests such as Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez and left-leaning U.S. academic Noam Chomsky.

"Julian Assange is famous for his anti-American and anti-Western views, that is exactly why Russia Today is hiring him as a journalist," said von Eggert, a commentator for Kommersant FM radio.

"So this partnership is logical.... It has nothing to do with freedom of speech or real journalism."

Russia Today - whose YouTube channel has had a record half a billion viewers - made headlines a year ago when U.S. airports refused to put up one of its controversial advertisements.

The billboards comparing Ahmadinejad and U.S. President Barack Obama with a tagline asking, "Who poses the greater nuclear threat?" did appear at airports across Europe.

Netflix sees DVD business withering, gives up on video games ...

Qwikster

Netflix has given up all hope that there's a future in DVDs.

Just last summer, the subscription video company was touting the potential of its DVD business as it established a separate unit to focus on it. "In Q4, we'll also return to marketing our DVD-by-mail service, something we haven't done for many quarters," Chief Executive Reed Hastings and Chief Financial Officer David Wells said in a July letter to shareholders. "Our goal is to keep DVD as healthy as possible for as many years as possible."

But since the Qwikster debacle, when Netflix announced a separately branded business for DVD rentals and then abandoned it in the face of public outcry, the company appears to have given up on that goal.

On an earnings conference call with analysts Wednesday, Hastings said Netflix now has no plans to spend any marketing dollars on its DVD-by-mail service, which lost 2.76 million subscribers during the last three months of 2011.

"We expect DVD subscribers to decline each quarter forever," he said.

When the Qwikster plans were announced, Netflix also said it would add video games to its DVD-by-mail business. But Hastings said the company has given up on that plan as well.

Why Ron Paul is shivering in Maine instead of cavorting in Florida

The other three GOP presidential candidates are stumping in Florida ahead of the Jan. 31 primary, a winner-take-all-delegates affair. But not Ron Paul. Here's why he's up in Maine.

What?s Ron Paul up to? The other three GOP presidential candidates are focusing their efforts on Florida in advance of the Sunshine State?s Jan. 31 primary. But Mr. Paul is taking two days this week to go in the other direction. He?ll be in Maine, speaking at Colby College on Friday and the University of Maine?s Gorham campus on Saturday, among other possible appearances.

Why Maine? It?s no secret that Paul is giving Florida a pass, because ad time there is expensive and the state?s electorate skews older, which is not Paul?s best demographic. The Texas libertarian is focusing on caucus states such as Maine and Nevada, where his fervent supporters can more easily out-organize the competition.

But here?s something that has been little noticed in the press: Maine?s caucuses actually begin this weekend. So Paul may be pulling something of an end run about his rivals.

Yes, we know, if you look at the Maine Republican Party?s website, it lists Feb. 11 as the date officials will announce the results of a caucus presidential straw poll.

But if you scroll through the details, you?ll see that the party has established a window of Feb. 4-11 for Maine Republicans to caucus and vote for a presidential nominee and delegates to the state convention. And if you really squint and look at the fine print, you?ll note that the party faithful in some towns have ignored this guidance, and are meeting either before or after the February window.

Lincoln, Lowell, Burlington, Chester, Enfield, Winn, and Howland are holding their joint caucus on Saturday, for example. Millinocket?s is on Sunday (it?s at the Snowmobile Club). Castine?s is not until March 3.

We?re not the only commentator to have noticed this. Josh Putnam, a political scientist at Davidson College who specializes in the election process, discussed this development on his Frontloading HQ blog on Wednesday.

Maine?s situation ?is unique, but it isn?t unprecedented,? wrote Mr. Putnam. Caucus states sometimes spread out their process down at the precinct or county level.

?Now, which candidate will make a last minute trip up to Penobscot County before Saturday?? Putnam asked, rhetorically.

We can answer that, can?t we? It?s Paul.

Of course, the stakes are higher in Florida, a winner-take-all primary with a prize of 50 delegates, than Maine, where caucusgoers will select 24 delegates statewide and vote in a nonbinding presidential straw poll. That?s why Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are battling it out down south. We?re sure it has nothing to do with the weather in Miami versus in Penobscot County, where this time last year it was about 14 below. That?s so cold that when you talk outdoors adverbs freeze and fall to the ground before they can find their proper place in a sentence.

Is this an image of the LG Optimus 3D 2?

What you see before you is either the deranged rantings of a lunatic, or the second generation of LG's Optimus 3D, erm, 3D smartphone. Currently codenamed "CX2," the handset's packing a new NOVA autostereoscopic display for better brightness, an unnamed 1.2GHz dual-core TI CPU and an NFC module. What isn't changing is the dual five-megapixel cameras, the 8GB storage or the display's size or resolution. Our biggest gripe with the device was its heft, but if the rumors are true, it's slimmed down from 12mm to 10mm: making it significantly more pocket-friendly. Our palms are sweating in anticipation as Mobile World Congress inches ever closer to revealing the truth.

India: Pakistan won't get access to Mumbai gunman (AP)

MUMBAI, India ? A Pakistani commission investigating the 2008 terror attack in Mumbai will visit in early February, but will not be allowed to interrogate the lone surviving gunman, Indian officials said Monday.

The visit is the result of intricate negotiations between the nuclear-armed neighbors, but is unlikely to resolve tensions over whether Pakistan is sincerely working to prosecute the attack's perpetrators ? who India says are linked to Pakistani security forces.

Disagreements over access to gunman Ajmal Kasab, who has been sentenced to death in India for his role in the rampage that killed 166, have spilled into public view.

Pakistan's interior minister, Rehman Malik, told India's NDTV last week that Pakistani officials would like to speak with Kasab directly to verify his confession.

"It can be verified either by bringing Ajmal Kasab to Pakistan or the judicial commission goes and personally interviews the witnesses, including Ajmal Kasab," he said. "That's what we have requested."

Ira Joshi, a spokeswoman for India's Ministry of Home Affairs, said Monday that such access was not part of the memorandum of understanding governing the visit.

In his confession before the court ? which he later tried to retract ? Kasab described in detail a network of training camps and safe houses across Pakistan, revealing the names of four men he said were his handlers.

India has accused Pakistani intelligence of being intricately involved in the planning of the attack, and officials have complained that Pakistan is not acting vigorously enough to bring the masterminds to justice.

Pakistan bristles at that criticism, noting that seven suspects in the Mumbai attack have been put on trial.

The Pakistani delegation will visit Mumbai in the first week of February and speak to doctors who did the post-mortems on the nine gunmen killed during the attack, as well as to the magistrate who recorded Kasab's confession and the chief investigating officer of the attacks, an official at Mumbai's high court said on condition of anonymity because of the confidential nature of the visit.

No time to play nice for US women's soccer team

Dominican Republic goalkeeper Heidy Salazar can't block a shot for a goal by United States' Abby Wambach during the first half of a CONCACAF women's Olympic qualifying soccer match in Vancouver, British Columbia, Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. (AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Jonathan Hayward)

(AP) ? It's hard not to look like a bully when the final score is 14-0. The U.S. women's soccer team had never beaten anyone that badly, not even in the days of Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain.

But this is no time for sympathy. This wasn't a friendly; this was the first game of qualifying for the London Olympics. The non-competitive blowout of the Dominican Republic on Friday night left no doubt whatsoever that the Americans have banned complacency from the roster.

"We want to qualify for the Olympics," coach Pia Sundhage said. "And that's what comes back all the time. This is important. We care every single game and every single goal. And if we can keep that and not take anything for granted ? like we almost did when we tried to qualify for the World Cup ? if we can keep that feeling, we will win the next game."

The shock to the system was a qualifying loss to Mexico in late 2010 that threw a huge detour into the Americans' route to last year's World Cup. It remains the only defeat for the U.S. team in 34 games of Olympic or World Cup qualifying.

So when the score was 7-0 at halftime Friday night, forward Abby Wambach wasn't satisfied. She's concerned the Americans might need a win a tiebreaker based on goal differential to get a more favorable matchup in the semifinals. She told her teammates to score more goals.

"It's not easy to beat a team 14-0, quite frankly," Wambach said. "But at the end of the day we needed to make sure and secure the goal differential. That's what's been on my mind all night."

It would seem the mission is accomplished. Soccer teams just don't win games by two touchdowns, not at this level. The previous record tally for the U.S. team was set back in 1991, with 12-0 wins over Mexico and Martinique in a pair of World Cup qualifiers.

But the BC Place crowd couldn't help but feel sorry for the Dominicans. They started cheering any accomplishment, no matter how small, by the underdogs ranked 88th in the world. The Americans could only do such much: You can't pull all the starters in a sport that only allows three substitutes. Besides, Sundhage wants her players honing their technical skills for the tougher games that lie ahead.

"You can literally put your foot on the ball and stop playing," Wambach said. "Or respect the game, respect your opponents and keep playing soccer. It's a hard balance. We don't want to put Dominican in a position where they feel bad about themselves. We want them to know that they have an opportunity to learn something as well. It's not easy."

There are eight teams in Vancouver vying for two CONCACAF berths for the London Games, but only four arrived in Canada with any sort of a realistic shot. Four games into the tournament, the score between the haves and have-nots was 27-0 ? the United States, Canada, Mexico and Costa Rica were unblemished against Haiti, Cuba, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic.

Essentially, the tournament serves to see whether Mexico and Costa Rica can swipe one or both Olympic berths favored to go to the U.S. and Canada. Sundhage, therefore, was asked whether the field is too big, given the embarrassment the Dominicans had just endured.

"No. I think it's a wonderful experience for all of us to be here," said Sundhage, who went on cite the value in giving developing teams more chances to travel and play games in high-profile tournaments.

Goalkeeper Hope Solo said she hopes the experience will enlighten the Dominicans so that they will "continue to put money into their federation and continue to grow women's soccer."

The Americans, meanwhile, spent Saturday preparing for what should be another overmatched opponent. They play 85th-ranked Guatemala on Sunday before wrapping up group play with a marquee game against Mexico on Tuesday.

But even one-sided games have their perils. Starting right back Ali Krieger tore the ACL and MCL in her right knee in the first half and is likely to miss the Olympics. The 27-year-old Krieger played every minute of all six games at last year's World Cup.

Losing Krieger will hurt, but the U.S. has one of the few teams deep enough to absorb such a blow. When Krieger left the game, she was replaced by Heather Mitts ? who earned her 119th international cap and would be a regular starter for most any other team in the world.

"It's really hard to make the team right now," Sundhage said. "We have so many good players. I think this is the best ? if you look at individuals ? the best team I've ever had since (becoming U.S. coach in) 2008."

SWTOR Vanity Pets Q&A with Damion Schubert ? Inquisitor's ...

As a serial MMO vanity pet collector, I?m thrilled to have gotten a few minutes of lead systems designer Damion Schubert?s time to talk about SWTOR?s adorable mechanical vanity pets. Read on for some details on upcoming additional ways to obtain vanity pets beyond purchasing from a vendor, pet improvements we can expect to see in the next major content patch, and find out which of the current pets is his favorite.

IR: Vanity or companion pets were added to the game pretty close to the end after a significant amount of forum speculation as to whether or not they would be in-game. Were they always on the road map for inclusion?

DS: They were always on the road map for inclusion!? One of the things about project development of a massive MMO is that you have to prioritize features in the best way to ensure the project gets done.? Tops are features that have high content requirements (such as story) and/or have major impacts on testing the core gameplay and world flow (such as combat and worldbuilding), so features that impacted those elements were built first.? Features that were more auxiliary to that, such as vanity pets and the dressing room, were less central ? not having them in wasn?t going to make the beta substantially worse or prevent other devs from doing their jobs ? and so those features were prioritized downwards.? But we knew we wanted them in.

IR: Right now, the pets we are seeing are all purchasable, some with light/dark side alignment requirements. Any intentions of having some that are drops in the future?

DS: Absolutely!? In fact, some of these should show up in our next major patch!? I don?t want to give out too big a hint, but they smell kinda bad on the outside.

IR: Do any of the currently discovered pets interact with their environment? i.e. in reply to locations/activities or emotes?

DS: Not at this time.? It?s something we?d like to add, but there are higher code priority features in queue right now.

IR: Is there going to be any way for characters to obtain opposite-faction pets?

DS: We currently have LS/DS pets, not opposite faction pets.? That?s not to say this won?t change.? One of the things we want to do a lot more of is adding items that take a bit of communal exploration to discover ? we?re well aware of how popular Datacrons and the Magenta Lightsaber crystal is ? and minipets is one place where we?ve identified adding fun things like that could really pay off.

IR: Are there plans to add in more pets? I?ve seen some pretty swanky robots out there I?d love to have miniaturized and following me along on my journeys.

DS: We plan to add a steady stream of new vanity pets to most major patches.? Note: I didn?t say ?all?, but we?re making a concerted effort to do this frequently.

IR: Will social level and eventually legacy level be key items pet collectors will want to focus on for access to more pets? Or do you think you will be finding additional ways such as random drops to spread around the pets?

DS: Yes, and yes!? We want to use the pets to reward as many kinds of gameplay as we can.

IR: Which is your favorite vanity pet in game currently and why?

DS: I gotta say, the little sandcrawler just cracks me up every time I see it.

IR: Any other improvements we can count on?

DS: Yep!? The abilities page just got restructured to improve usability, and one of the things that fell out of that was a dedicated ?Pets? section.? This will come in the next major patch.

A big THANK YOU! to Damion for taking the time to talk minipets with us!

McKendree women win tourney

LEBANON -- The McKendree University women's bowling team kicked off the second half of its 2011-12 season in strong fashion last weekend at the Roto Grip Eagles Baker Challenge, taking first place in both the varsity and junior varsity sections of the two-day event. EDWARDSVILLE -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville associate coach Tony Stoecklin has announced another addition to the most recent recruiting class. Outfielder Bryan Ryberg (St. Charles, Mo.) has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Cougars beginning with the 2013 season.

"Bryan is an extremely athletic outfielder," Stoecklin said. "He has a very quick, flat swing and a nice approach at the plate. He's a tough out."

Ryberg is a 5-foot, 10-inch left-handed hitter who played at Francis Howell North High School. He hit .389 as a junior with four doubles and 10 RBIs. He led the Gateway Athletic Conference with five triples. Ryberg led Howell North with 10 stolen bases. He was an honorable mention All-GAC selection as a junior.

Ryberg also has been on the honor roll at Howell North all four years.

"He's cut from the same cloth as the rest of the (recruiting) class," Stoecklin added. "He has good academics and great character."

Ryberg joins Zach Little (Washington), Jacob Stewart (Mt. Zion), Caleb Wilkerson (Festus, Mo.), and Justin (JD) Williams (Kansas City, Mo.) who previously signed letters of intent to play for the Cougars in 2013.

Top Senate Republican wants Web bill shelved (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The top Senate Republican urged Democrats on Thursday to set aside a bill aimed at stopping online piracy of movies and music, dealing yet another blow to controversial legislation that has pitted Hollywood against tech companies.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a procedural vote on the PROTECT IP Act on Tuesday. That measure, and a similar bill in the House of Representatives, is aimed at curbing access to overseas websites that traffic in pirated content and counterfeit products.

But support for the bills has eroded over fears that legitimate web sites could also end up in legal jeopardy.

"Rather than prematurely bringing the Protect IP Act to the Senate floor, we should first study and resolve the serious issues with this legislation," said Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican leader in the Senate. "I encourage the Senate majority to reconsider its decision to proceed to this bill."

Democrats have a majority in the Senate but bills need 60 votes to come up for debate so the legislation will need some Republican support to survive.

Earlier on Friday, a senior Senate Democratic aide acknowledged that the bill's backers did not have the votes to bring the measure to the floor to begin debate.

"The momentum now is for killing the bill," the aide said.

But, the aide said, Senator Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was working to craft a proposed compromise that could win Senate approval.

"We should be able to go ahead and try to fix the bill. There is no reason that this bill can't be fixed through the legislative process," the aide said.

Some senators who had co-sponsored the legislation dropped their support on Wednesday as protests blanketed the Internet, turning Wikipedia and other popular web sites dark. Google, Facebook, Twitter and others protested the proposed legislation but did not shut down.
