Extended warranties are usually a waste of money

By Herb Weisbaum, TODAY contributor

We?ve all been there. You go to the store to buy a television, toaster or tablet computer. The friendly sales associate helps you find just the right one.?

Then, before you can even reach for your wallet she says, ?Of course, you?ll want the extended warranty on that, right???

?Why?? you ask. ?A few seconds ago you told me I made a great choice.??

?You did,? she reassures you. ?But you never know when something can go wrong and these things are incredibly expensive to repair. Why take the risk???

So, what do you do??

In the December issue, the editors at Consumer Reports advise readers to resist the extended-warranty pitch.?

?We believe most people don?t need extended warranties,? executive editor Greg Daugherty told me. ?Most products are reasonably reliable these days. If they are going to break it?s probably early on when the manufacturer?s warranty is still in effect or way down the road after the extended warranty would have expired. So you?re buying protection for a fairly limited period of time.??

Service plans aren?t cheap. Consumer Reports says they can increase the price of that item by a third or more. And stores keep 50 percent or more of what they charge for these plans. That?s normally more than they make on the products they sell. That?s why the salespeople push so hard to get you to buy.?

?We found that repair costs very often aren?t much higher than the cost of an extended warranty,? Daugherty said. ?So in the odd event that you?re going to need a repair, it probably won?t cost you any more than you would have paid for the warranty. And if you don?t need a repair, you get to keep that money.??

Repair service after the sale can be lacking
Based on its surveys of subscribers, Consumer Reports cautions that an extended warranty doesn?t guarantee that you?ll get the item fixed.? The salesperson might exaggerate the extent of the coverage or there might be limitations in the fine print you don?t know about.?

?We found that people sometimes get a runaround or that it?s just slower to get something repaired by an extended warranty than to take it to the repair shop and get it fixed yourself,? Daugherty explained.?

Worse yet, the company might refuse to make repairs under the service contract. ConsumerWorld.org recently ran a story in its Mouse Print section about a woman in the Boston area who paid $298 for a four-year service contract for her washer and dryer back in 2009.?

Recently, the washing machine broke. The repairman said he could not fix it under the service plan because the repair would cost $1,300 and the washer was only worth $589. They would pay her the $589, but that was less than the cost of a new washer.

Can they do that? Consumer World?s founder, Edgar Dworsky, checked and indeed the service contract gave the company the option to do that ? to declare the product ?un-repairable.?

The lesson here is to read any service contract you plan to buy before you buy it, and see if it includes the right of the servicer to refuse repairs or to cap its liability,? Dworsky cautioned.

Another way to go
You may already have extended warranty protection from your credit card issuer. Many cards now automatically double the manufacturer?s warranty by up to a year for items you charge to the card.?

The coverage varies from card to card and there are limitations. For example, MasterCard normally limits this extra protection to products where the original warranty is one year or less. So check the terms and conditions on your credit cards before you go shopping.?

?If this perk comes with your card, you?d be foolish to not to use it and maybe skip the extra coverage,? Dworsky said.?

A word about portable computers
You might want to consider a service plan if you buy a laptop or tablet computer. There?s a greater chance of damage with a portable computer. Consumer Reports suggests a service plan to cover accidental damage.?

Both Dell and Sony sell stand-alone coverage for accidental damage. These two-year plans range in price from $50 to $70 for Dell and $50 to $100 for Sony, depending on the model.?

Another way to go: add coverage to your homeowners, renters or condo insurance policy. Consumer Reports notes that Liberty Mutual?s home-computer endorsement (with a $50 deductible) is just $20 a year.?

The bottom line
If you buy reliable brands and products, you should have little need for an extended service contract.?

Consider this: These contracts are highly profitable for the warranty companies that issue them because relatively few people need to use them.?

Despite all the downside risks, maybe you just can?t live without the ?added peace of mind? you get from a service contract. Okay, but you don?t need to buy it on the spot. Ask for written information about the program (or where you can find the contract online) so you can study it and see what?s really covered. You should also search online to see if others have had problems with the company providing the service contract.?

Remember: Verbal promises from a salesperson don?t mean anything. Neither do the hyped-up claims made in a brochure. The terms of the contract are what count.

Not just sexy Kim Jong-un: 5 times the Onion has fooled foreign media

When the People's Daily, the Chinese Communist Party's official newspaper, took as straight news The Onion's declaration that stout North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un was 2012's "Sexiest Man Alive," it became the biggest foreign media outlet to be fooled by the satirical American newspaper. But it is not the first. Here are several other foreign news sites that took Onion fiction as newsworthy fact.

The People's Daily: Kim Jong-un as 'Sexiest Man Alive'

While North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has received a litany of titles (mostly from his own party and government), he has yet to be recognized by any Western media as a sex symbol. So one might think that when The Onion declared the "Pyongyang-bred heartthrob" its "Sexiest Man Alive" for 2012, readers would be suspicious of the article's seriousness. Certainly, the list of previous winners ? including Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, convicted conman Bernie Madoff, and Unabomber Ted Kaczynski ? suggested that the piece might be satirical.

But that conclusion appears not to have been reached in the offices of the People's Daily. The Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece treated the article as a straight-laced story and heralded The Onion's "honor" of the stout North Korean dictator, complete with a 55-page photo gallery of Mr. Kim, presumably to capitalize on his physical charms. The Internet was highly amused.

The Onion appreciated the Daily's efforts as well. Calling the Chinese paper its "proud Communist subsidiary," The Onion updated its original story to recommend that readers read the Daily's "exemplary reportage" on the Kim honor.

The People's Daily has since removed the story from its website.

Iran's Fars news agency: Rural Americans prefer Ahmadinejad to Obama

With Iran's economy struggling under US and European sanctions, US President Barack Obama ? who championed the sanctions' implementation ? has been none too popular in Tehran.

Given that, the editors of Iran's semi-official news agency Fars must have been quite pleased when in late September, they found a news story in English reporting that 77 percent of rural white Americans would "rather vote for Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad than" Obama. Indeed, Fars reposted the story whole hog ? and without attribution ? on its website.

It was, of course, an Onion article.

Upon realizing their error, the Fars editors withdrew the article, replacing it with "our formal apologies for that mistake."

The unnamed Fars editor-in-chief also noted, perhaps optimistically, that "Although it does not justify our mistake, we do believe that if a free opinion poll is conducted in the US, a majority of Americans would prefer anyone outside the US political system to President Barack Obama and American statesmen."

Two Bangladeshi papers: Neil Armstrong convinced Moon landings were a hoax

Neil Armstrong, as the first man on the Moon, is the last man you'd expect to call NASA's Moon missions a hoax. But that didn't stop two Bangladeshi newspapers, the Daily Manab Zamin and News Nation, from translating and printing an August 2009 Onion article that claimed Mr. Armstrong said just that.

The Onion cited the fictional Armstrong as telling a press conference that after he read "a few hastily written paragraphs published" by a Moon-landing skeptic, he realized "I had been living a lie."

"It has become painfully clear to me that on July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module under the control of my crew did not in fact travel 250,000 miles over eight days, touch down on the moon, and perform various experiments, ushering in a new era for humanity. Instead, the entire thing was filmed on a soundstage, most likely in New Mexico," he "said."

The newspapers' editors later apologized for being fooled as easily as faux-Armstrong was.

"We thought it was true so we printed it without checking," associate editor Hasanuzzuman Khan told the AFP news agency. "We didn't know the Onion was not a real news site."

Denmark's TV 2: Sean Penn's outrage over not getting seanpenn@gmail.com

Actor Sean Penn has a reputation for occasional angry, grandiose outbursts. That is, of course, the joke behind a 2006 Onion article, wherein Mr. Penn demands to know who took the "seanpenn@gmail.com" email address before he could.

The Onion purported that Penn, in a sometimes salty 1,900-word open letter published in The Washington Post, asked whoever had the Gmail address at issue to "come forward immediately, rather than wallowing in the shame and ignominy of fraud."

"Sir or madam, if only you could have seen the anger and revulsion that washed over my face as I found that SeanPenn@gmail.com, Penn@gmail.com, SPenn@gmail.com, Penn.Sean@gmail.com, and SeanPennRules@gmail.com had all been taken," Penn's letter read. "If only you could have felt my heart leap to my throat upon realizing that Seanpenn@gmail.com would not work either, as Gmail addresses are not case-senstitive. If only you could have heard my cry of anguish when, in a last, desperate move, I typed in Spicoli@gmail.com, only to be rejected once more and finally forced to accept the abomination that is Sean.Penn20061@gmail.com."

Denmark's TV 2 took the story to be true, and printed an article in Danish on the subject, complete with a poll asking whether Penn was right to be angry. (The article has since been removed, but can still be seen on the Internet Archive.)

To be fair to TV 2, they did list the story under their gossip section.

Beijing Evening News: US Congress threatens to relocate if new capitol not built

"Calling the current U.S. Capitol 'inadequate and obsolete,' Congress will relocate to Charlotte or Memphis if its demands for a new, state-of-the-art facility are not met," The Onion wrote in May 2002.

"Don't get us wrong: We love the drafty old building," Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) said. "But the hard reality is, it's no longer suitable for a world-class legislative branch. The sight lines are bad, there aren't enough concession stands or bathrooms, and the parking is miserable. It hurts to say, but the capitol's time has come and gone."

It is likely that the editors of the Beijing Evening News did not recognize the article's reference to US professional sports franchises' demands for new stadiums. But one might think that the illustration of a proposed new capitol building with a retractable dome would suggest something odd about the Onion article.

It did not. The Evening News published the story as real. And initially, even when told the story was satire, the Chinese paper's international news editor "ruled out a correction, challenging a [Los Angeles] Times reporter to prove that the story was false."

The Evening News did realize its error a week later, and apologized for its mistake, though it still seemed not to understand The Onion's satirical nature.

"Some small American newspapers frequently fabricate offbeat news to trick people into noticing them, with the aim of making money," the paper said. "This is what the Onion does."

... and US domestic media have been duped, too.

It would be unfair to single out foreign media as the only victims of The Onion's straight-faced wit, since the US media have fallen for its stories as well.

In 2010, Fox News' Fox Nation subsite treated an Onion story entitled "Frustrated Obama Sends Nation Rambling 75,000-Word E-Mail" as fact ? as did numerous commenters on the story, according to Mediaite.

In 2004, MSNBC's Deborah Norville cited a new study as saying "58 percent of all the exercise done in America is broadcast on television. For instance, of the 3.5 billion sit-ups done during 2003, two million, 30,000 of them were on exercise shows on Lifetime or one of the ESPN channels." That study was, naturally, an Onion invention.

And The Onion continues to fool readers every day, as the Literally Unbelievable website reveals.

The Monitor is not presently aware of having treated a story from The Onion as factual. But The Onion's writers are quite clever, so the possibility can't be ruled out.

gulftoday.ae | EU agrees on significant debt relief deal for Greece

BRUSSELS: Greece won breathing space on Tuesday with long-frozen eurozone loans to restart from December and a first clear admission that a chunk of the country's debt burden will need to be written off down the line.

After 13 hours of talks in Brussels, the eurozone and the International Monetary Fund agreed to unlock 43.7 billion euros ($56 billion) in loans and on the need to grant significant debt relief for decades to come.

Greece must still meet a series of agreed conditions but "the decision will certainly reduce the uncertainty and strengthen confidence in Europe and in Greece," said European Central Bank President Mario Draghi who left the talks before a final press conference.

Starved of bailout financing since the summer, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras hailed the deal in Athens, while German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said the package would be presented to German lawmakers by the end of the week.

Other member states will also have to obtain their parliament's approval for the deal.

"Everything has gone well," Samaras told reporters in Athens.

"All Greeks have fought (for this decision) and tomorrow is a new day for every Greek person," he added.

Finance ministers, the IMF and the ECB said the money would be paid in four installments from Dec.13 through until the end of March, conditional on Greece funnelling income back to creditors at source and on the implementation by Athens of tax reforms settled with creditors.

The initial market response was upbeat.

On currency markets the euro was stronger in Asian trade as investors breathed a sigh of relief over the deal for Greece.

The 17-nation currency bought $1.2980 and 106.46 yen in Tokyo morning trade after briefly topping $1.30 for the first time in about a month.
That was up from $1.2971 and 106.38 yen in New York trade late on Monday.

Asian stock markets also enjoyed the news in early trading, with Tokyo shares rising 0.38 per cent by the break, Hong Kong up 0.25 per cent and Sydney gaining 0.68 per cent.

The results of the "labourious" negotiations according to IMF head Christine Lagarde are intended to see Greece's debt-to-GDP ratio fall from an estimated 144 percent to 124 per cent come 2020, and "substantially below 110 per cent" of gross domestic product by 2022.

"The IMF wanted to make sure the euro partners would take the necessary actions to bring Greece's debt on a sustainable path," said Lagarde.

"I can say today that it has been achieved."

There will be a mixture of techniques used to bring down Greece's debt burden.

These will begin with a buyback by Greece of old debt that has fallen in value on commercial money markets as well as national central banks across the eurozone foregoing profits on holdings of Greek debt whose worth has slumped.

Medicare Solutions Blog ? Stay Healthy This Holiday Season Using ...

At this time of the year when so many of our social and holiday gatherings are food and drink-related, it is especially important to follow steps to maintain healthy habits.? Review your healthcare plan to uncover specific benefits which will help you remain healthy and prevent illness during the holiday season and the New Year.

Staying Active

If you are a senior, look for ways to keep yourself fit, strong and flexible to reduce holiday stress and help prevent ailments.? Not only will staying active promote positive mental and emotional health, but it will also increase your chances to remain independent long after the holiday decorations are stored away.

With many leading insurance plans, enrollment includes discounts for health club memberships and fitness classes.?? Many leading Medicare health plans also offer SilverSneakers Fitness Program designed to help older adults and seniors live fit, active and independent lifestyles.? (To determine if your health plan offers SilverSneakers, visit:? http://www.silversneakers.com/HealthPlanLocator.aspx.)

Quitting Smoking

The holiday season is a stressful time of the year for most people, and for those who are working to quit smoking, the holidays can be especially challenging.? Even though the single most preventable cause of death and disease in the United States is tobacco use, quitting smoking for most people is extremely difficult.

If you decide to quit on your own, there are several steps you should take to increase your chances of success, including:

  • ?Setting a ?quit date.?? Tell family members, friends and co-workers about your decision and ask for their support.
  • Get enough rest to reduce that run-down feeling and resist the urge for cravings.
  • Reduce your caffeine when you need an energy boost; take a rest instead if you?re tired.
  • Drink more water as not only is it a great craving-buster, but it will keep you well-hydrated and feeling better in general.
  • Go for a walk to reduce stress and improve circulation.? When the urge to smoke strikes, head out for a quick walk.? You?ll come back relaxed and refreshed.
  • Contact your healthcare provider and inquire if they have any programs to support you during your journey or ask them if they have any medicines that may help you quit.
  • ?After you quit, keep yourself away from cigarettes and situations that may ?trigger? your desire to smoke.? If you slip and smoke; don?t give up!? Set a new ?quit date? and learn from your mistakes.

Many medical plans recognize the toll that smoking takes on a person?s well-being and offer programs that offer a variety of solutions to quitting.? Tobacco Use Cessation Counseling is a benefit that is now considered a preventative service, whether or not you have been diagnosed with an illness caused or complicated by tobacco use.? While it may be difficult, and at times uncomfortable, navigating the holidays without cigarettes is a vital part of your journey.? Put yourself in the best possible environment for success as you move through the next few months and keep your decision for a healthier, smoke-free life in focus.

No Cost Screenings

Although there are often too few minutes in the day during the holiday season, putting your health on the back-burner for the next few months is not a wise decision.? Take the time necessary to take advantage of the many preventative services that are covered under Medicare.

In particular, make certain you are up-to-date on vaccines that can prevent seasonal illnesses such as influenza.? If your holiday schedule includes parties and dinners and you are concerned about controlling weight or diabetes, seek out medical nutrition therapy and counseling to help manage these illnesses.

In addition, don?t put off doctor?s visits when necessary.? Even though you may be spending additional money during the holiday season, the list below includes preventative services that Medicare currently covers at no cost:

  • ?Annual Wellness Visits:? This exam is a one-time review of your health as well as education and counseling about preventive services and other care.
  • Screenings:? No longer will you need to pay a Medicare Part B deductible or copayment for these screenings if certain coverage criteria applies:
  • Bone mass measurement
  • Cervical cancer screening, including Pap smear tests and pelvic exams
  • Cholesterol and other cardiovascular screenings
  • Colorectal cancer screenings
  • Diabetes screening
  • Flu shot, pneumonia shot and the Hepatitis B shot
  • Glaucoma tests
  • HIV screening for people at increased risk or who ask for the test
  • Mammograms
  • Medical nutrition therapy to help manage diabetes or kidney disease
  • Prostate cancer screening

Utilizing Available Resources

Making informed decisions regarding your medical conditions requires getting information from an educated source.?? Most insurance plans now provide written materials, including newsletters and dedicated websites to help you manage your health.? Whether you?re dealing with a specific health issue or trying to prevent problems, consult your health plan to determine if they offer any of the following:

  • Nursing hotlines for easy-access information from home or away.
  • Wellness discounts on health and wellness products, over-the-counter medicines and vision services.
  • Caregiver Support for access to services for managing chronic conditions.
  • Help after Hospitalization.? During the holidays when family members and friends may be busy traveling, it may be especially critical to utilize skilled nursing and home health aide services to ensure that on-going patient care is uninterrupted.
  • Medicare coverage while traveling during the holidays.

Remember, with balance and moderation, you can enjoy the holidays in a healthy way.?? Knowing your health plan and the benefits it offers you is the first step towards taking care of yourself and enjoying the bounties of the season.

"Black Friday" on Thursday kicks off holiday shopping

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shoppers took advantage of retailers offering a Thursday night start to the traditional post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping season, lining up at stores to get deals on electronics and other items or to just see what the fuss was about.

This year, Target Corp joined Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Gap Inc in being open at least part of the day on Thursday and some retailers will be open throughout the day, a trend that began to take hold in 2011.

Wal-Mart's U.S. discount stores, which have been open on Thanksgiving Day since 1988, offered some "Black Friday" deals at 8 p.m. local time and special deals on some electronics at 10 p.m. Target has moved its opening from midnight to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Toys R Us is opening at 8 p.m.

"It's a recognition that retailers need to be more aggressive and want to show their physical stores are important," Moody's senior analyst Charles O'Shea said.

While he didn't see enormous crowds out in Vauxhall, New Jersey, he did see about 15 people lined up already at a Best Buy, which opens at midnight. At a Target in Westbury, only two shoppers were in line for a 9 p.m. opening. Still, for retailers, any crowd could make the effort worth it.

"It's a finite pie; if you can get a bit more by being open, then do it," O'Shea said.

The National Retail Federation, an industry trade group, forecast a 4.1 percent increase in retail sales during the November-December holiday period this year, down from the 5.6 percent increase seen in 2011.

Some retailers, like Best Buy Co Inc are keeping Black Friday on Friday, waiting until midnight to open.

At a Best Buy in Orlando, people had camped out in tents for days waiting for the doors to open.

Gabriel Esteves, 33, a self-employed car audio installer, waited in line with a bag of Cheetos and a Coke while his brother and sister went to their homes for Thanksgiving feasts with their families.

"They told me to take a break and go to the house, but today's the worst day to leave the line. People come and cut in line," said Esteves, who got in line Monday to buy some small electronics and a 50-inch television.

Best Buy, which is trying to stem falling sales under new CEO Hubert Joly, is one of the retailers in the spotlight this season.

At some stores, workers were not so happy to have early openings encroach on their Thanksgiving holiday. A petition asking Target to "save Thanksgiving" had 371,606 supporters as of Thursday afternoon.

Still, at a Target on Chicago's northwest Side, the first person waiting in line Thursday night was someone who worked at the store, Elsa Acevedo, 46, who finished her shift at 4:30 a.m. and lined up at about 2:30 p.m. to buy a 50-inch Westinghouse television.

As for the earlier opening, "I just think it takes people away from their families," she said. But she added that a midnight opening also pulled workers away from Thanksgiving celebrations because they had to prepare the stores to open.

Many shoppers lured into stores by earlier openings on Thursday may just be window-shopping.

More than 50 percent of consumers will do some form of "show-rooming" during the Black Friday weekend, said Kevin Sterneckert, vice president of retail research at Gartner Group.

"They will buy things because they looked at it in the store. They will touch and feel what they are interested in and then buy it online on Monday, either from the same retailer or a different online retailer," Sterneckert said.

At a Kmart on 34th Street in Manhattan earlier Thursday, Charles Montague, a 55-year-old mover, was browsing the aisles just to kill time.

"I don't holiday shop," he said emphatically. "I buy stuff all year long, not during some man-made holiday."

Some were not waiting for Monday to buy on the Internet. Online Thanksgiving 2012 sales were already up 17.8 percent over Thanksgiving 2011 for the same period, measured through 9 p.m. EST, according to IBM.

THE RESULTS MATTER

The stakes are high for U.S. retailers, which can earn more than a third of their annual sales in the holiday season.

Consumers heading into the holiday shopping season remain worried about high unemployment and possible tax increases and government spending cuts in 2013. Also, lasting effects of Sandy, the storm that lashed the densely populated East Coast in late October, could cut into how much shoppers can spend on the holidays.

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, two-thirds of shoppers said they were planning to spend the same amount as last year or were unsure about spending plans, while 21 percent intend to spend less and 11 percent plan to spend more.

"My family decided not to buy (Chanukah) presents this year - only for the kids. It's too expensive," said graduate student Danielle Slade, 29, from Jericho, Long Island.

Still, the Standard & Poor's retail index is up almost 27 percent this year, compared with a 10.6 percent increase for the broader S&P 500.

In New York's Times Square, a mix of locals and tourists lined up at Toys R Us.

"We just want to see what's happening," said a man who arrived Thursday from Paris. "We want to see what Black Friday is." A Santa hat-wearing expeditor quickly whisked him and his companion away before they could give their names.

It appears that it's not just us Brits who are fascinated with the UK weather.

A group of researchers from Germany has taken to investigating the potential changes in extreme rainfall patterns across the UK as a result of future global warming and has found that in some regions, the time of year when we see the heaviest rainfall is set to shift.

The study, published today, 21 November, in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters, finds that between 2061 and 2100, the south-east of the country will likely experience its most extreme rainfall later in the year whereas the north-east will likely experience it earlier in the year.

The peak time of intense precipitation will shift from late summer to autumn in south-eastern regions and in north-western regions it will shift from December to November. There were no projected changes for other regions of the UK.

These shifts will coincide with times of the year when river catchments in those regions are at their maximum water capacity, meaning there would be an increased risk of flooding.

Lead author of the study, Anne Schindler, said: "In late autumn, the river catchments in the north-west reach their maximum capacity of water, as do the eastern catchments in winter. This is the time of the year when on average the most floods occur. Therefore, you can conclude that risk increases when the timing of the near field capacity and the probability for most extreme rainfall coincides."

The researchers, from the University of Giessen and GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, investigated the future changes using 12 climate model simulations for the periods 2021-2060 and 2061-2100, each forced with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) A1B scenario.

They also investigated whether the range of extreme rainfall throughout the year was set to get even greater with warming and did observe a projected increase in western regions of the UK; however, they make it clear that this finding is not robust and would need closer examination.

Schindler continued: "There are different mechanisms that influence extreme precipitation in the two regions we've highlighted. Extreme precipitation in the north-west is strongly influenced by westerly airflow and in the south-east the highest precipitation events are influenced by easterly flows from the North Sea.

"The shifts we have projected could be caused among other factors by changes in these large-scale circulation systems; however, this needs further investigation. For instance, we know there are deficits in the representation of rainfall in climate models and we do not know how the peak times vary from year to year without any man-made climate change."

The UK has a long history of monitoring rainfall and has a large number of rain gauges scattered across the country, providing a wealth of information and making it an ideal place to study.

Indy home blast now homicide probe

The probe into a massive explosion earlier this month in Indianapolis that killed two people and damaged dozens of homes is now an active criminal homicide investigation, with authorities saying they believe the blast was caused intentionally, ABC News has learned.

At a meeting this evening at the Southport Presbyterian Church to update residents of the Richmond Hill subdivision where the blast occurred, Marion County prosecutor Terry Curry said the criminal homicide investigation is ongoing.

"While the fire investigation has been progressing, there has been a parallel investigation, not solely focusing on the cause of the explosion but focusing on individuals who may have been responsible once accidental causes were eliminated," Curry said. "That investigation has consisted of numerous interviews with various individuals as well as execution of a number of search warrants and is being conducted jointly by the [Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department] and the [Marion County Prosecutor's Office]."

The ATF offered up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest in the case.

The explosion in the subdivision just south of the city on Saturday, Nov. 10, killed John and Jennifer Longworth. Their funeral was held earlier today.

Much of the attention since the explosion has centered on Monserrate Shirley and her boyfriend Mark Leonard, who lived at the house in the center of the blast area.

John Shirley, who owns that house but now lives elsewhere, told ABC News two days after the blast that he believed that his ex-wife, who still lives in the house, was to blame for the explosion.

Shirley claimed he knew that the furnace in the house was broken and had not been fixed properly, if at all.

"If I were to suspect anything, that's where the problem was," said Shirley, who noted that his ex-wife Monserrate Shirley had a "protective order" against him. However, Shirley said he did not believe his ex-wife would have caused the explosion intentionally.

"I don't think so, because there was no real reason to," Shirley said. "I pay a thousand dollars a month for one kid because she had a lawyer and I did not, so she has more than enough money. At one point the house was slipping into foreclosure. Last spring she had a buyer but she chose not to sell. We were in some bankruptcy but that's pretty well cleared up."

Monserrate Shirley and Leonard were reportedly visiting a casino at the time of the blast.

Protective eyewear recommended for field hockey players | Sports ...

Field hockey has become more popular among high school athletes over the past two decades, and changes to equipment and the style of play have increased the risk of injuries, especially eye injuries.

The study, ?Effectiveness of Protective Eyewear in Reducing? Eye Injuries Among High School Field Hockey Players,? in the December 2012 Pediatrics, analyzed eye injuries in field hockey players in 14 states in 2009 and 2010, when not all states required protective eyewear. (The National Federation of State High School Associations mandated high school field hockey players wear protective eyewear starting in the 2011-2012 season.)?

Of 212 injuries to the eyes, face and head, 31 occurred in athletes who lived in states with an eyewear mandate; 181 occurred in athletes living in states without an eyewear requirement. Only 1 eye injury was reported in states that required eye protection. In states that did not require protection, 21 eye injuries were reported.

Overall, the protective eyewear requirement was associated with a 32 percent lower rate of total head and face injury, and an 80 percent lower rate of eye injuries. Concussion rates were similar between the two groups.

Study authors conclude that playing field hockey without protective eyewear results in a significantly increased risk of head and face injuries, and they suggest further research to determine whether protective eyewear would reduce the risk of eye injuries for athletes on collegiate and national teams.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

Issue One / President Obama's re-election

Pushing socialism

The main concern with President Barack Obama's re-election is his push toward a socialistic society, which will become even more escalated in his final term in office. All of his policies are geared toward making people more dependent on the government (Obamacare, welfare, unemployment compensation, Social Security, Medicare, bailouts, stimulus packages, etc.), which moves us closer to a Marxist "classless society."

Based on the teachings of two of Mr. Obama's socialist college professors at Columbia, crippling our economy by excess spending and borrowing is the first step and that was put in play in his first term. Now, in his second term, playing Robin Hood and taxing the rich to give to the poor is a well-thought-out plan toward government dependence and a single class of citizens.

It has often been said that the demise of the United States of America will never come as a result of an attack from a foreign power but rather internally by its own people. You just witnessed this on Nov. 6. The majority of the American voters (whether they know it or not) now believe that socialism is a better form of government than our highly successful, capitalistic democratic republic, which was the building block of the greatest nation in the world.

Move over, Europe, we are right behind you.

MIKE DAVIC
South Park

The system works

Why is there still so much negative attention looming over the re-election of President Obama? We should understand that, with a government for and by the people, we are in fact the government. As a republic we have created laws and structure based on ethical principles that overlap many philosophies and ancient teachings. This is the reason the system works.

Our presidents take the reins for four years at a stride. Now, think about your own employment. How much can you accomplish in merely four years? Could you deal with all levels of government; lead military endeavors; protect 314.7 million Americans; instigate, consider and sign hundreds of bills crossing your desk; balance the budget and create understanding with world leaders while looking good delivering televised speeches? If you can answer yes to this question, please throw your hat into the ring for the next presidential election.

I can't imagine why anyone would want this job. We should all take our hats off to anyone who pledges to serve the public and is elected by we the people.

(AP Photo/Courtesy Show Of Support)

(AP) ? Organizers of a parade in West Texas in which four U.S. military veterans were killed when a train plowed into a truck had been using the same route for three years, investigators said Sunday.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Mark Rosekind also announced that oilfield services company Smith Industries was the owner of the truck that served as the float the veterans were on during Thursday's parade in Midland.

Rosekind said the company was cooperating with investigators, who expect to interview the driver on Monday. The NTSB declined to release the driver's name.

Rick B. Smith, Smith Industries' CEO and president, did not immediately respond to phone calls or emails seeking comment.

Investigators have said the truck began crossing the train tracks even though warning bells were sounding and lights were flashing.

However, some Midland residents said they believe the signal time is too short. They say the guardrails aren't completely down by the time a train comes whizzing by.

"The signals come on and the arms go down, but before they are fully down, the train is already at the intersection," said Mark Thomas, who lives blocks from the track and says he crosses it daily.

"These signal times are unacceptable," Thomas added.

According to the NTSB, the warning system was activated 20 seconds before the accident, and the guardrail began to come down seven seconds after that. Everything functioned properly, Rosekind said, but investigators will have to check to make sure the signal timing met the requirements for that particular crossing.

The truck was the second of two parade floats filled with wounded war veterans. The first float had already cleared the tracks when the accident happened. Four veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan were killed and 16 more people were injured.

The parade was organized by a group called Show of Support-Hunt for Heroes and has been an annual event in Midland for nine years. It was supposed to be the start of a three-day weekend of banquets, deer hunting and shopping in appreciation of the veterans' service.

Rosekind said investigators were also looking at whether organizers had the proper permits for the parade.

"This is an entirely volunteer organization and activity, so there were a lot of things that were donated, and so that changes kind of the rules of what had to be filed," he said.

Midland is in Texas' oil-rich Permian basin, a region that has experienced a significant oil boom in recent years.

According to its website, Midland-based Smith Industries sells and manufactures oilfield service equipment. The website says the company provides steel and fiberglass tanks, separators, ladders, walkways and other equipment. The company has been in operation since 2000.

Smith Industries has a large facility and warehouse about five miles from the city. On Sunday, the business was closed. An American and Texas flag flew at half-mast and blue ribbons were tied around columns in a small parking lot. Large tanks, pipes, heavy machinery and trucks were scattered behind the gates.

Rosekind said the NTSB will conduct a sight test, probably Tuesday, to try to determine what the train engineer could see leading up to the crash. He said Smith Industries would likely provide a truck for the test.

According to the NTSB, the train sounded its horn nine seconds before the crash. The guardrail hit the truck, and then the engineer pulled the emergency brake, trying to bring the train that was traveling at 62 mph to a screeching halt.

The NTSB based its timeline on cameras and data records.

Killed were Marine Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gary Stouffer, 37; Army Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Boivin, 47; Army Sgt. Joshua Michael, 34; and Army Sgt. Maj. William Lubbers, 43.

Two of the injured were still at a Midland hospital Sunday afternoon, one in critical condition and another in stable condition.

N.Y.C. Thanksgiving Parade Balloons Survive Sandy, Parade to Go On

By Vickie Frantz, AccuWeather.com Staff Writer
November 18, 2012; 3:34 PM

Although Sandy did billions of dollars worth of damage along the East Coast, the stored Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade supplies were unharmed.

The balloons are stored in the New Jersey town of Moonachie, according to latimes.com. The town, located about 10 miles northwest of Manhattan, was flooded by 5 feet of water due to tidal surge from Hurricane Sandy.

The design studio that houses the large balloons was not flooded and there was no damage to a nearby warehouse where most of the other parade equipment is stored.

When the balloons fly on Thanksgiving Day, 5,000 people who were impacted by Sandy will be watching from seats in the stands thanks to tickets Macy's set aside for them.

The tickets will be distributed to the neighborhoods hardest hit by Sandy. The elected officials who represent the neighborhoods will coordinate the ticket distribution, according to silive.com.

Macy's will also be providing the families with transportation to and from the parade.

The weather will be great for watching the parade. "It will be mainly dry, with a mix of clouds and sun," said AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Edwards.

"Winds will be out of the north, northwest and very light at 5-10 m.p.h. The temperature during the parade will start out around 46 degrees F and warm to 50 degrees F by the end."

Writing to Make a Difference - Activist Faith

Guest post from Activist Faith co-found Daniel Darling with novelist Kahi Macias on social issues. Great input for writers wanting to make a difference.

Kathi Macias is a great friend and a fellow New Hope
author. She is a prolific author, having written nearly 30 books and
ghost-written numerous others. She has taught and coached writers at
conferences around the country is an in-demand public speaker at women?s
conferences.

My wife is actually reading How to Keep a Tight Ship When You?re Surrounded by Loose Cannons, which she says has already provided her with a lot of laughs and much inspiration for raising our three children.

1) You?ve been writing and speaking for a long time-what first stirred in your heart the passion to put words on paper?

I can?t remember a time when I didn?t want to write. I was reading
before I started kindergarten and just seemed to have an ongoing love
affair with words. When my husband, Al, (then boyfriend) and I were
walking home from school one day in junior high I announced to him that I
was going to be a writer some day. He often comments that I?m probably
the only person he knows who knew what I wanted to be when I grew up?and
did it!

2) You?ve helped New Hope Publishers launch their first fiction line. You guys are doing something a bit different with it. What exactly is ?missional fiction??

?Missional fiction,? or ?fiction with a mission,? is just that:
fictional stories based on true stories of those whose lives are
dedicated to fulfilling the Great Commission and going into all the
world to preach the gospel and make disciples. The stories are based not
only on foreign missionaries but also on nationals, all of whom are
challenged at some point in their faith?possibly even to the point of
laying down their lives. Ultimately, though, we hope to challenge
readers to move into that same level of faith. Of course, not all the
series that will be included in this ?fiction with a mission? line will
be about missionaries, but all will have a greater mission of educating
and challenging readers to a deeper level of faith and a more vibrant
love-relationship with the Father.

3)?No Greater Love weaves a story of romance into the epic story of Nelson Mandela, apartheid, and South Africa. What drew you to this story?

This story was originally birthed in my heart more than twenty years
ago, as I watched the violence and upheaval in South Africa, preceding
the release of Nelson Mandela from prison and the downfall of Apartheid.
I couldn?t help but wonder how it was affecting believers in that
country and how it might eventually affect us in other countries as
well. The nugget of an idea?an interracial, forbidden romance?sparked
the story, though it sat on the back burner for many years before I
sensed God releasing me to move forward with it. By that time my vision
for the story had grown to include believers in other countries around
the world?hence, the Extreme Devotion series of four books, rather than a
stand-alone book as I had originally anticipated. (God?s plans and
timing are always so much better than our own!)

4)?More Than Conquerors is
set in the violence of Mexico?s drug wars. This is an especially
relevant given the increasing attention given to what is happening
there. What surprised you the most about what is going on there?

Not only does?More than Conquerors delve into the violence
of the Mexican drug wars, but it encompasses the superstition of the
Mayan culture in the Southern portions of Mexico as well?San Juan
Chamula in Chiapas State in particular. We hear so much about the
illegal immigration problem in our country, about the violence of the
drug wars spilling over across the border, and also the human
trafficking that is interwoven with so much of these problems. But we
seldom hear of the extreme devotion of those in Mexico who love and
serve God under some very harsh and dangerous conditions, and who
treasure family second only to their relationship to Christ. That?s the
part of Mexico I wanted to bring to life in?More than Conquerors.

5) If you could give one piece of advice to young, emerging, writers, what would that be?

Spend time with God, discovering and developing your own calling and
passion for ministry, and then let that focus birth the words and
stories you write. It?s too easy to jump on someone else?s bandwagon,
only to discover it?s already full and straining at the seams. You don?t
need to adopt someone else?s vision; God has one tailor-made just for
you. Seek Him first?and He will be faithful to reveal it to you. And
then be patient until He moves you forward in the fullness of His time.
