Is it any big surprise that we, the eccentric, vintage-obsessed, fun-loving inhabitants of Plasticland are gigantic Wes Anderson fans? After all, a director whose go-to toolbox contains fantastic vintage wardrobes, color-tinged film, and cool cat Bill Murray is bound to be someone we admire. I think it just makes sense that Rushmore is an all-time favorite of ours; a weirdo art kid in a beret, who would rather devote his time to manning the helms of extra-curricular clubs instead of listening to endless lectures or studying algebra.
So with plenty of movie candy in hand, we eagerly ventured to the Angelika Theater in Dallas to view the newest Wes Anderson creation, Moonrise Kingdom?
From Rotten Tomatoes:
?Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore ? and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle.?
Now, if you?ve seen past Wes Anderson films you?ll know what to expect ? visually rich scenes, troubled yet endearing characters, and storylines told with wit and occasional dark humor. Moonrise Kingdom delivers that same basic formula. The standout difference in this film is the children?their characters and acting contain an innocence that makes them more relatable and more sentimental than a lot of Anderson?s other characters. Of course, we do feel a strong emotional connection with a movie?s female lead when she wears saddle shoes, earrings made of beetles and carries around a record player and a suitcase full of fiction books.
Although the story?s summer camp backdrop is a theme that?s been done plenty of times before, it does provide a lot of the movie?s funniest moments. Likewise, the idealistic and dreamy story of young runaways falling head over heels for one another appeals to the romantic in In summary, we?d say it?s a cool flick that?s fun, entertaining and a-okay in our book!
