(AP) ? Premier Mario Monti said Sunday that his government of technocrats has approved a package of austerity and growth measures to "reawaken" the Italian economy and help save the euro common currency from collapse.

The measures include immediate cuts to the costs of maintaining Italy's bulky political class as well as significant measures to fight tax evasion, Monti told a news conference following a three-hour Cabinet meeting.

As part of the political cost cuts, Monti said he would forego his salary as premiere.

The package also includes measures to spur growth and competition, while aiming to stamp out rampant nepotism.

"We gave a lot of weight to fairness, we had to distribute some of the sacrifices but we took a lot of care to distribute them in a fair way," Monti said.

Monti will outline the measures on Monday to Parliament, which must approve them.

The premier spent the weekend briefing political parties, unions, business groups, consumer lobbies and others.

Is FarmVille developer Zynga worth $9 billion?

Stephen Lam / Reuters

Next Internet gazillionaire? Zynga CEO Mark Pincus is shown this year at the Zynga Unleashed event at the social gaming company's headquarters in San Francisco.

By Martha C. White

Social gaming company Zynga turned millions of Facebook users into virtual farmers and mafia dons with its universe of virtual worlds. Getting consumers to pay real money for virtual goods was a tough nut to crack, but the nearly five-year-old company might have an even harder time convincing investors that it is worth $9 billion.

Zynga plans to price its shares at $8.50 to $10 a share, which would value the company at about $9 billion,?when it goes public within the next couple of weeks. Only a few weeks earlier, its filings proposed a price target that would have given it a market cap of $14 billion. Even with these lowered expectations, Zynga's initial sale could generate?$1 billion for the company.

Zynga dominates the social gaming space, a market that's predicted to grow 19 percent in the next two years, according to research company eMarketer. "They didn't necessarily invent social gaming, but they've really turned it into this large industry," said Paul Verna, senior analyst at eMarketer. "They dominate the market almost completely." ?

But consumers are fickle, and fad-driven phenomenon can go from ubiquitous to late-night punchline very quickly. "Social gaming does continue to increase, but having said that, there's no guarantee six months from now this will still be a cool thing to do," Verna said.

If social gaming does prove to have long-term staying power, Zynga will have a lot more company in the future, as deep-pocketed competitors like Disney and Electronic Arts join the fray. EA recently acquired PopCap, a major Zynga competitor and developer of games like Bejeweled and Plants Vs. Zombies. Sam Hamadeh, CEO of research firm PrivCo., pointed out that Zynga's monthly average user number dropped by 8 million in just two quarters, and predicted the company will lose even more market share as competition intensifies.

Recent media reports indicated that the high-pressure atmosphere has led to discontent among Zynga's employees. Some analysts said that CEO Mark Pincus' management style, abrasive even in Silicon Valley terms, could be a stumbling block for a post-IPO Zynga as it tries to recruit and retain talent.?

"It would seem to me that Pincus burned a lot of bridges with employees and potential employees with his aggressive actions," Eric Jackson, founder of investment firm Ironfire Capital, said. "Once the IPO hype fades, people will say, 'Why would I want to put up with this?'"

Maybe employees will cash out and flee as soon as they can turn their stock options into cash. Rick Summer, senior equity analyst for research firm MorningStar, said the real problem created by Zynga's cutthroat corporate culture is that no one wants to be bought by them. "You never want to be the buyer of last resort," he said.

In other words, start-ups would rather stay on the sidelines until a more agreeable suitor comes by. That's not good, said Summer, because the influx of competitors into social gaming virtually mandate Zynga to spend some of that IPO cash on acquisitions. Startups that spurn Zynga create an opening for the company's competitors to expand at its expense.?

Even if it implements a warmer, fuzzier management style, Zynga will still face intense pressure. Jackson compared the company to movie or music producers."You're only as good as your last hit, and there's a constant need to come up with the next big thing," he said.

Some analysts voiced concerned about Zynga's lopsided relationship with Facebook. Zynga's Facebook advantage is that it can offer its games on Facebook's existing platform and can bypass the retail channel by which offline games reach the consumer. PrivCo's Hamadeh said the social behemoth, which is still privately held, confers a kind of halo effect on companies like Zynga. Investors think, "It's a great proxy for an investment in Facebook," he said.

CNBC's Kayla Tausche has the details on Zynga's selling strategy ahead of its IPO.

But this leaves Zynga deeply dependent on Facebook, Morningstar's Summer pointed out.?One option for Zynga would be to focus more on mobile games, a market segment predicted to grow even faster than social games. The drawback is that the solitary nature of these games don't offer the kind of organic growth Zynga enjoyed with the viral spread of games like FarmVille, where players recruited their friends to join the game. Plus, without Facebook, Zynga would have to decide if it wanted to develop games on platforms like Apple's iOS or Google's Android, or create its own platform and compete with these heavy hitters.?

"If you're only a developer of applications... that puts a cap on how big you can be," Summer said. But on the flip side, investors might be spooked if Zynga's success depended on going head to head with Apple or Google.

"They're just another gaming company,"?said Ironfire's Jackson.?"I think there's way too much hype that's been attached to them."

What is your favorite Zynga game?

(AP) ? A day after Herman Cain shuttered his Republican candidacy for president, struggling GOP hopefuls looked to pick up the fallen candidate's tea party following and upset a primary dynamic that has pushed Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to the forefront.

Reps. Ron Paul of Texas and Michele Bachmann of Minnesota said Sunday they expected Cain supporters would fall in line behind them because of their messages on limited government, despite their low standing in the polls. Meanwhile, last-place rival Rick Santorum predicted he now had a good chance of winning the Iowa caucus.

While such brazen predictions are likely overstated, the 11th-hour press comes at a crucial time and could upset an already volatile race for the GOP endorsement. A month before the first vote is cast in the Iowa caucus and five weeks before the New Hampshire primary, most GOP candidates were looking to a week of heavy campaigning in Iowa ahead of the next debate, scheduled for Saturday. The stakes are possibly the highest for Mitt Romney, who could be hurt the worst if Cain supporters rally behind Gingrich.

"A lot of Herman Cain supporters have been calling our office and they've been coming over to our side," said Bachmann. "They saw Herman Cain as an outsider and I think they see that my voice would be the one that would be most reflective of his."

Likewise, Paul said he was optimistic that Cain's departure would reinvigorate his campaign.

"We're paying a lot of attention to that, because obviously they're going to go somewhere in the next week or so," Paul said of Cain's supporters.

Santorum predicted that his campaign would pick up steam in coming days.

"We have a very strong, consistent conservative message that matches up better with Iowans than anybody else. And we think we're going to surprise a lot of people," he said.

Once surging in the polls, Cain dropped out of the race Saturday after battling allegations of sexual harassment and a claim that he had a 13-year extramarital affair. The Georgia businessman has denied the accusations.

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker from Georgia, has so far been the biggest beneficiary of Cain's slide. A Des Moines Register poll conducted Nov. 27-30 and released late Saturday found the former House speaker leading the GOP field with 25 percent support, ahead of Paul at 18 percent and Romney at 16.

A separate NBC News/Marist poll showed Gingrich beating Romney, 26 percent to 18 percent, among Republican caucus attendees in Iowa.

Gingrich also is enjoying national popularity that could give him the momentum he needs to overcome deficiencies in the organization of his campaign. At the same time, Gingrich says he knows his surge in the polls could disappear if his opponents stage a comeback.

"I'm not going to say that any of my friends can't suddenly surprise us," Gingrich said at a recent town hall meeting in New York sponsored by tea party supporters.

Meanwhile, Romney is running strong in New Hampshire, which holds the nation's first primary on Jan. 10. Romney is also seen by most conservatives at this point as having the greatest chance of defeating President Barack Obama next year.

But Romney continues to be viewed with suspicion by many conservatives who say he has changed his stance on such critical issues as abortion and health care. Santorum acknowledged Sunday that Romney has embraced more conservative positions on issues.

"The question is, you know, what's the sincerity of the move and whether he can be trusted," said Santorum.

Bachmann said it was too soon to declare anyone a true front-runner because the dynamic in the race was constantly changing.

"We've got 30 days," she said. "That's an eternity in this race."

Reince Priebus, the Republican Party chairman, said Sunday that he was indifferent to Cain's departure and that it was "only natural" in the face of falling poll numbers and trouble raising money.

This week's agenda for the primary candidates included a stop in Arizona by Romney and a forum Wednesday by the Republican Jewish Coalition in Washington, which is expected to attract Bachmann, Gingrich, Huntsman, Perry, Romney and Santorum. Gingrich was scheduled to meet Monday with real-estate mogul Donald Trump at Trump's New York offices. Trump, who briefly entered the primary race in the spring and drew considerable publicity when he questioned the validity of Obama's birth certificate, said he would moderate a Republican presidential debate in Iowa on Dec. 27.

Paul, who has clashed publicly with Trump, said he thought the GOP was making a mistake in giving Trump so much credibility.

"I don't understand the marching to his office. I mean I didn't know that he had an ability to lay on hands, you know, and anoint people," Paul said.

Paul and Bachmann spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Santorum spoke on ABC's "This Week." Priebus spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Astronomers Discover 18 Huge New Alien Planets (SPACE.com)

Astronomers have found 18 new alien planets, all of them Jupiter-size gas giants that circle stars bigger than our sun, a new study reports.

The discoveries increase the number of known planets orbiting massive stars by 50 percent. The exoplanet bounty should also help astronomers better understand how giant planets form and grow in nascent alien solar systems, researchers said.

The haul comes just a few months after a different team of researchers announced the discovery of 50 newfound alien worlds, including one rocky planet that could be a good candidate for life. The list of known alien planets is now well over 700 and climbing fast.

Staring at 'retired' stars

The researchers surveyed about 300 stars using the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and instruments in Texas and Arizona. They focused on so-called "retired" type A stars that are at least 1.5 times more massive than our own sun.

These stars are just beyond the main stage of life ? hence the name "retired" ? and are now ballooning out to become what's known as subgiant stars.

The team scrutinized these stars, looking for slight wobbles caused by the gravitational tug of orbiting planets. This process revealed 18 new alien worlds, all of them with masses similar to Jupiter's. All 18 planets also orbit relatively far from their stars, at a distance of at least 0.7 times the span from Earth to the sun (about 93 million miles, or 150 million kilometers). [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]

Planet-formation theories

In addition to boosting the ever-growing alien planet tally, the new finds lend support to one of two theories that attempt to explain the formation and evolution of planets, researchers said.

This theory, called core accretion, posits that planets grow as gas and dust glom onto seed particles in a protoplanetary disk. Core accretion predicts that the characteristics of a planetary system ? the number and size of planets, for example ? depend strongly on the mass of the star.

The main competing theory, called gravitational collapse, holds that planets form when big clouds of gas and dust in the disk spontaneously collapse into clumps that become planets. According to this idea, stellar mass should have little impact on planet size, number and other characteristics.

As the exoplanet finds pile up, it seems that stellar mass does in fact play an important role. The 18 huge newfound alien worlds, which all orbit massive stars, add more evidence in support of core accretion, researchers said.

"It's nice to see all these converging lines of evidence pointing toward one class of formation mechanisms," study lead author John Johnson, of Caltech in Pasadena, said in a statement.

Johnson and his colleagues reported their results in the December issue of the Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series.
